This morning, the class had the opportunity to visit with Judy Tighe, Executive Director of Jacksonville Main Street, to learn about the history, revitalization, and economic importance of downtown Jacksonville.
Jacksonville's historic square has been at the center of the community since 1825. Over the years, it has experienced tremendous changes, from a thriving business district to the challenges brought by urban renewal in the 1970s. Today, thanks to the dedication of Jacksonville Main Street, local business owners, community leaders, and countless volunteers, the square continues to experience an exciting transformation! Judy helped the students understand that revitalizing a downtown doesn't happen overnight. It takes vision, investment, collaboration, and people who believe their community is worth the effort. The restoration of the historic square, preservation of its buildings, and growth of locally owned businesses demonstrate what can happen when a community works together.
For the students, this was an important reminder that entrepreneurship isn't just about starting a business. It’s about creating opportunities, strengthening communities, and investing in the places we call home. We often encourage our students to dream big, but we also want them to recognize the opportunities that exist right here in west-central Illinois. Sometimes making a difference doesn't mean leaving your hometown. Sometimes it means helping build its future!
Thank you, Judy, for sharing your knowledge, passion, and commitment to making downtown Jacksonville a place where businesses and communities can thrive!
